From 11–15 May 2009, Hispack will feature some of the latest technological developments in the packaging sector. Kathleen Armstrong reports

Around 60,000 trade visitors are expected to attend the international packaging exhibition, Hispack 2009, which will this year be held jointly with food technology fair BtA (Barcelona Food Technologies) in Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via exhibition centre.

Over 2,000 companies will show their wares in over 800 stands. Atlantic Zeiser will showcase its Omega 72i inkjet printer, a high-resolution printer that supports print width of up to 72 mm and is said to provide a print quality of 360 x 360 dpi and a maximum production speed of up to 60 m/min. It will be shown in combination with the company’s Omega 36. Also on the company’s stand will be the Gamma 70 digital, full-colour inkjet module for product personalisation and Braillejet, Atlantic Zeiser’s Braille printing system.

Rovema will introduce the new HVS140N pouch machine for four-sided sealing of shampoo sachets. The HVS140N is claimed to provide “unheard-of flexibility and handling in this type of machine”. Also at the stand will be the VPI180 intermittent vertical form fill and seal (VFFS) machine in twin and single execution, the VPL180 continuous motion VFFS system, the ELD6/4 servo-driven drop packer, and the ETIL 432 fully integrated tray erector, bag loader and case/tray closure machine.

Among the equipment on display at the Valco Melton stand will be its newly introduced labelling systems featuring a range of BAT application heads, which are said to enable the exact adjustment of label specifications in the first phase of the labelling process. Suction modules in the second phase are claimed to provide clean cut-off at high-speed rates. “Both innovations enable greater application speed while providing maximum flexibility for easier pattern changes,” the company states.

Fix-a-Form Spain, part of the Denny Bros group, will also be exhibiting its full range of labels at Hispack. Visit the stand for samples or to discuss what its multi-page labels can do for on-pack communication.

Fuji Seal Europe will be showing what it claims to be one of the fastest sleeving machines on the market. The 4500 Dual Head sleeving machine runs at 800 bottles per minute, thanks to its rotary application technology. Customers will be able to follow the development of the product with examples ranging from traditional labelling systems to the current technology. Other products launched in the Iberian market and internationally over the last four years will also be on show.

KHS’s new range of modular packaging equipment will be on display at Hispack, with capacities ranging from 35 to 135 cycles per minute. Harmonisation of the product range, with a common design for function modules within capacity ranges, will make the changeover of packaging equipment easier, quicker and more flexible, the company says. KHS will be presenting a new generation of shrink tunnels, which, in addition to the standard electric heater option, can also be heated economically and ecologically using gas.

Sustainable development solutions

Sleever International will present its PowerSleeve Evolution IV, the latest generation in the PowerSleeve range of sleeving machines, running at speeds of up to 30,000 bph. The company will also display its range of products for sustainable development, including the launch of the Biosleeve, a biodegradable label developed by Sleever International with Ingeo.

Other products for sustainability on show at the stand will include Sleever Glass Decorating that is claimed to

offer cost reduction on finishing processes for glass bottles, and Skinsleever, a matte-shiny embossed effect reproducing a metallic feel for Coty’s Playboy fragrance.

Markem-Imaje will showcase its next generation thermal transfer SmartDate, inkjet 9000 and laser 7000 coders, as well as its latest Touch Dry ink systems and its CoLOS software for networking and image design.

Two new products will be on display at the PBI-Dansensor España stand. The CheckPoint II portable headspace gas analyser was released in November 2008. Ideal for smaller volume production facilities, the CheckPoint II has built-in intelligence to alert the operator to any errors.

Also on show at the stand will be PermMate, PBI-Dansensor’s new system for measuring the oxygen permeability of finished packages. PermMate has been designed to enable packaging engineers to test packaging materials for their permeability properties. Sales and Marketing Manager Karsten Kejlhof says: “We believe that PermMate will be an essential tool for packaging engineers at a cost that would previously have been prohibitive and will make permeability testing much more routine.“

This year SICK launched its global ‘Innovations Marathon’, pledging to launch a new innovation each week. The innovations on show at Hispack will include the new LMS100 laser measurement system, a compact device designed for factory automation but also suitable for mobile applications on vehicles, service robots and building security systems.

The W4S-3 Inox photoelectric switch from SICK is claimed to offer a range of performance features including immunity to ambient light and enhanced detection capability with highly reflective, transparent or jet-black objects.

Taking the spotlight at the Beumer stand will be its latest stretch hood packaging machine, a high-capacity machine designed for pallet packaging. The company says the technological innovations mean a reduction in the consumption of packaging materials by up to 40 per cent, as well as lower energy costs. In addition, the smooth, perforation-free surface allows customers to have a clear view of the packaged merchandise, enhancing the display effect at point of sale.

Spanish debut

Making its first appearance in the Spanish market, at the Videojet stand will be the 1210 ink jet printer, designed for simple coding applications of around six to eight hours per day, five days per week. “This printer meets the needs of customers with simple code requirements such as lot and date codes in the food, chemical, and personal care or cosmetic industries,” says Kevin Honan, Small Character Ink Jet Product Manager at Videojet.

Also making their debut on the Spanish scene will be Videojet’s new 7210 and 7310 fibre laser marking systems, which offer a low power, solid-state laser marker solution especially suitable for direct parts marking and unique identification coding on a wide range of metal, plastic and other hard-to-mark materials.

Betaprint, part of the ITW Group, will focus its exhibit on thermal transfer technology at Hispack including the newly launched 53LTi intermittent, entry-level coder, created as a more versatile system for users of traditional hot foil equipment in the food and pharmaceutical markets. The TP4100 thermal transfer printer will also be featured. Purpose-built to handle the high throughputs offered by a range of multilane packaging equipment, it uses multiple heads to simultaneously print to numerous lanes.

Also on display at the Betaprint stand will be the Jaguar II thermal print series, the company’s latest-generation R-3500 pressure sensitive labeller and the Logitron 1950 label applicator.

Other companies at the show will include Mettler-Toledo, which will present a range of products, including x-ray and metal detection equipment for product inspection, dimensioners, software systems, standard industry scales and retail scales.

Also displaying its wares will be Bosch Packaging Technology, whose products on show will include the SVE2515WR vertical form fill and seal machine with ultrasonic sealing technology and the Pack-401, a horizontal pillow-pack machine from Tevopharm and Doboy, two Bosch Packaging Technology companies. Both products have been designed for use in confectionery and food packaging applications.
