FLEXO INSIGHT

27 April 2010

EFIA promotes flexo as the process of choice.

At the 2010 EFTA Print Awards Gala Dinner we announced EFTA would be changing its name to the European Flexographic Industry Association. We believe EFIA recognises the need for the UK industry to increase its competitiveness in the face of demands placed on it through the supply chain, and understand better the global arena.

The challenges of the past few years show no signs of abating and day-to-day pressures can mean that some insularity results in the UK. Due to globalisation of brands and the speed of technological change, EFIA must aim to fill that knowledge gap for its members.

Flexo has come a long way from its early origins and it is clear that the process is eminently capable of producing exceptional results in many areas of packaging print, as seen in this year’s Print Award winners.

The technical focus of EFTA has helped companies understand the technology changes that were exponential in the past 15 years and have helped us achieve outstanding results, but the rate of such technology change is slower now and demands have changed. Run lengths are shorter, time to market is shorter, product ranges are larger and overseas competition is stronger.

These are just some of the challenges placed on the UK industry by the demands of the supply chain and we have recognised the need to change our focus of activity, to assist our members accordingly. This is especially important at a time of raw material price fluctuations and price increases. EFIA will be rolling out its experience in lean manufacturing aimed at taking out all unnecessary activity and focusing on adding value to the product.

We will be developing Lean On Line learning materials through our EFTA Academy and implementing an Advanced Flexo Course to complement the current on-line course, which has helped more than 150 students.

Also, by spending time with current and potential members we will be able to develop our offerings effectively. The first meeting covering the North West is on 18 May in Pontefract. For details, call +44 (0)1458 241455 or email hiding@efta.co.uk.
