Packaging on parade in Paris

10 October 2014

Emballage 2014, co-located with Manutention 2014, on 17-20 November at Paris Nord Villepinte, will provide a showcase for 1,500 exhibitors in the packaging, processing, printing and handling sectors.

Aptar Food + Beverage, exhibiting on stand 6F098, is to feature its bag-on-valve aerosol for liquid condiments. The product is preserved and its shelf life increased thanks to the self-sealing valve placed on four "ultra-resistant layers of protection". The bag-on-valve provides a continuous spray, works at any angle and can be used for various applications. No preservatives are needed.

Visitors to stand 6H132 will learn how Dalim Software solutions can improve label and packaging production. The ES 4.5 software co-ordinates all activities from design to final print, including regulatory compliance, localisation and versioning - in house or external - to ensure efficiency. Whether for reviewing and commenting on the content of any digital media, or a colour accurate soft proof, the "fast and intuitive" Dialogue Engine helps to streamline approval cycles and to meet deadlines quickly. The company will also feature the latest releases of the Twist 7.5 production automation engine. Its "almost infinite variety of processing possibilities" helps to implement cross-media workflows to deliver predictable files to different media channels.

Induction cap sealing specialist Enercon Industries will be showcasing its range of machines on stand 4B034, marking the end of what is expected to be the company's most successful sales year ever in France. Paul Bennion, European sales director, says: "With the help of our French distributor, Serpac, Enercon has been making significant inroads in the French market this year. "We've seen an increase in enquiries from French businesses looking to move away from conduction sealing and reap the rewards of induction heatsealing instead." Using induction instead of conduction is said to offer "massive energy savings - at times as much as 90%". It also provides instant start-up without the system warm-up required by conduction systems. Among the equipment to be displayed at Emballage is the Super Seal Touch heatsealer, whose performance and adaptability are said to provide an extremely wide and flexible window of operation to compensate for fluctuating line speeds or changes in cap, liner and container tolerances.

An innovation from FT System will be the SafetyPack.O2 , a "revolutionary" laboratory instrument which measures O² content in a non-invasive manner. The system use laser spectroscopy for analysis of sealed recipients in a modified atmosphere for food packaging. All types of product, recipients and closures can be handled, in transparent or semi-transparent containers. The results are shown as percentage levels of oxygen concentration, monitoring of modified atmosphere quality, sealing, closure process, product safety, legal requirements, etc. An unlimited number of tests can be performed on the same container. Stand 4D034.

For handling powder and fluid products, Liftvrac (stand 5aC104) has introduced a conveyor system with a polyurethane belt which envelops the product throughout the lifting process. A tube is formed and sealed with a "lip" system, which closes the belt under the pressure exerted by the product. "Perfectly sealed", the system can carry all types of powdered products without problems, according to Liftvrac. It can also work with allergen substances without any risk of contaminating the surrounding environment.

Polyolefin additives supplier Milliken will showcase Ultra Clear PP-based commercial applications on stand 6C088. Ultra Clear PP clarified with the Millad NX 8000 series is claimed to set "a new clarity standard for PP that is comparable to glass-clear materials" for thermoforming and sheet packaging. Millad NX 8000 is said to give PP a clarity boost that overcomes its traditional undesirable milky appearance in thermoforming, creating transparency similar to PET for applications such as meat trays, clamshell containers and lids. Ultra Clear PP also offers important performance benefits such as mono-material packaging, easy seal, chemical resistance, and imact and heat resistance. Milliken will also feature its ClearShield colourless UV absorbers, which "create a new UV protection performance standard for PET that extends the shelf life of packaged materials and protects brand image for food, beverages and consumer products". Approved for food contact applications by the European Food Safety Authority, ClearShield also overcomes the deficiencies of traditional technologies, including unwanted colour, migration, bloom and plate-out.

The RPC Group will be found on stand 6H116, displaying the latest innovations for a variety of end markets from its Superfos, Bebo and Blow Moulding clusters. RPC Emballages Moirans will launch a new barrier process for blow moulded containers, and RPC Superfos will showcase the latest decoration advances for its Paintainer - as well as new pet food and snack packs, and latest examples of applications for its SuperLock injection moulded barrier pot. Solutions for a variety of extended ambient shelf life products will also be showcased by RPC Containers Corby and RPC Barrier Containers. RPC Protect is a new barrier solution for RPC Emballages Moirans' range of blow moulded containers up to 30 litres, which offers an effective barrier against solvent-based products. The new reclosable LongLife plastics pet food pack from RPC Superfos is said to provide an excellent alternative to the traditional aluminium tray, combining ease of use with an extended shelf life. The company's new EasySnacking snack pack is available in two designs: one with a spoon in the lid and one with a higher lid, with room for both a crunchy topping and the spoon. There are two sizes - 210 or 300ml. Apart from outstanding convenience and functionality, the pot is reclosable, stable and optimised for stacking, filled or empty.

An anti-counterfeiting carton package using fully integrated printed electronics will be introduced by Saralon on stand 6P056. The EC-display only works by pressing an integral button in combination with the perforated opener and shows any integrated information, such as proof-of-ownership. Once the perforation has been opened, the display will not work again - any reuse is impossible. Any information can be integrated into the EC-display - logo, QR code, phone number, prescription, etc - and the pack can be used for a wide variety of products, including pharmaceuticals, automotive spare parts, and various premium goods.

On stand 5aF023, Gerhard Schubert will present its VMS packaging machine control system, which integrates all the functions of a serialised pharmaceutical final packaging process, from acceptance of the products to placement of finished products on the pallet. All automation components, such as robots, scanners, cameras and printers, communicate with the VMS. With its TLM technology Transmodul, Schubert also provides a system component with special advantages for track & trace. The Transmodul, a single-axis rail-based robot, can be precisely located at all times (100% position control). As a result, the status of products which the Transmodul conveys through the entire line is always defined. TLM technology and its system components are constantly being further developed. The machine at Emballage will showcase the current stage of development using a picker line as an example. Schubert-Pharma has planned, implemented and qualified packaging lines for a wide variety of products, including syringes, vials, ampoules, cartridges and hospital care products.

Inspirational support

Emballage 2014 is not only a platform for business and sourcing, but also for inspiration, thanks to its supporting programme of conferences, a TV studio broadcasting live, a showcase of packaging innovations, and displays to explore the packaging of the future.

The Pack Innovation area will be dedicated to exhibitors' latest innovations. The new products featured have been selected by an international jury of packaging journalists.

To take stock of future regulatory changes, decipher business trends, and understand the challenges faced by other countries, the Pack Vision conference programme will focus on sectoral and cross-cutting issues.

The Emballage TV studio will be broadcasting live and industry news during the show, providing a novel discussion platform for personalities, media, experts, institutions and exhibitors.

The SYMOP Forum is a lively place for visitors and exhibitors alike, located at the heart of the business arena, "for rapid meetings that get to the point". Top level speakers, presentations of real-life customer cases and informal discussions between professionals will help to build a clear vision of the market and the solutions available.

Emballage has also joined forces with Strate, a French design school, to explore the packaging of tomorrow through a new design experience. Best Pack - Design will welcome students from design schools in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Turkey in Hall 6. Their challenge is to select, from each of the show's six sectors (Beverages & Liquids, Food, Luxury products, Beauty, Health and Multi-industry), "packaging that truly reflects their national markets and to propose a better alternative with a packaging design approach". The results will be exhibited throughout the show.

This year, Emballage will welcome an exhibition of award winning work from The Dieline Awards 2014, an international competition that rewards the product with the best packaging design. In addition, The Dieline Summit, held on Monday 17 November, will enable packaging design professionals "to better understand the place of design in their brand strategy and the essential role of packaging design both today and tomorrow".
