Prescription for packaging

12 January 2011

Next month’s Pharmapack conference and exhibition in Paris, France - 23-24 February 2011 - will present the innovations and products of more than 250 manufacturers and suppliers of drug packaging and delivery systems.

Burgopak (booth 536) recently strengthened its presence in the pharmaceutical industry when its ‘revolutionary’ pharmaceutical pack was selected for two product launches by Sanofi Aventis. Offering an operating system that supports patient safety, is robust, portable and user-friendly, the innovative pack incorporates a patented sliding mechanism that keeps the patient information booklet, blisters and branded outer carton conveniently connected at all times. It will be used to package Sanofi Aventis’ DolipraneLib painkiller and Maalox maux d'estomac heartburn relief medication in France. Burgopack’s durable pack can be conveniently carried in a bag, briefcase or pocket. Burgopak’s child-resistant and senior-friendly designs have achieved the F=1 top rating for compliance in the USA. Difficult to make, the patented mechanism reduces the chances of counterfeiting. The pack allows for maximum opportunity in brand communication and its high structural integrity extends its lifespan and ensures that the patient retains the entire pack intact at all times. Produced on the company’s new Bosch Sigpack machinery, four basic designs can be customised to accommodate most pill, blister and leaflet sizes.

Once considered a niche market, Bag-On-Valves (BOVs) are becoming increasingly popular for cosmetics and pharmaceutical products, states Coster (booth 372). These dual-compartment valves are now used for sun screens, sunless tanners, shaving gels, toothpastes and several different active pharmaceutical ingredients. Formulations can be dispensed in any form (liquid, gel, cream or highly viscous substances) and in any position (inverted or upright). BOVs preserve the product from external contamination and keep it ‘perfectly separated’ from the propellant. There is no need to add preservatives as the content is completely sealed from any possible contact with the air. They are also environment-friendly as they can be used in combination with compressed air or with liquefied propellants. Coster claims to be the only manufacturer of BOVs with 1 inch and 20mm diameters. It also manufactures filling equipment.

A new continuous motion ultrasonic welding and assembly machine for plastics materials will be shown by Lagniel (booth 165). It can handle high speed assembly and/or test processes, and components of various geometrical shapes, at speeds from 150-1,200ppm. An alternative to the sticking, snapping and screwing processes for blood filters, catheters IV, syringes, pockets, pumps, this technology’s advantages include: quality and precision of the assembly; sealing and tightness quality; simplification of components, as well as a production increase for a faster ROI. Sister company Guy Neyret (booth 167) will feature a new multi-speed Indexed rotating ring that enables assembly of components on the same machine running at 1 part/sec. This innovation avoids machine duplication, which reduces floor surface and all the associated resources.

Sterilisable high barrier, transparent, formable films to wrap antibiotics and blood plasma are available from Huhtamaki Ronsberg (booth 362). These coated films are said to show an excellent transparency and formability combined with soft PP sealing layers. Peel functionality can also be incorporated. The result is said to be a very secure secondary wrap for highly sensitive products such as blood, peritoneal or parenteral liquids. The company offers a variety of thermal sterilisable film compounds, as well as tailor-made solutions.

Egyptian manufacturer Frank Noe (booth 177) produces plastics pharmaceutical containers, cylinders, pumps and jars, and desiccant integrated solutions for the pharmaceutical industry. Both off-the-shelf ranges and customised products are available to ISO and GMP quality standards. Child-proof covers and tamper-evident closure systems are also produced. Desiccants can be incorporated directly into the cover closure, for maximum shelf life and product integrity. Desiccant capsules all comply with FDA requirements for direct contact with food and drugs. Mixtures of Silica gel with activated carbon are also available.
