Scents of innovation

1 November 2012

A highly regarded event in the perfume and cosmetics industry calendar, PCD Congress will again run in conjunction with the Aerosol & Dispensing Forum in Paris, February 6-7 next year

The twin themes of innovation and sustainable development remain at the core of the two-day PCD (Perfumes, Cosmetics & Design) Congress, which will run for its 9th annual edition next February at the Espace Champerret exhibition centre in the west of Paris, held jointly with the annual Aerosol Dispensing Forum (ADF).

Together in their 2013 editions, the two events are expected to attract more than 2,500 participants from 40 countries, with brand packaging experts and their main suppliers – more than 160 industry specialists in fields such as materials, TTS and decoration techniques, aerosol and dispensing systems, converting, contract packing, services and technology – available on the stands.

Visitors to the event, including specifiers, contract packers and representatives of R&D laboratories from around the world, will be able to talk directly to the key personnel from more than 110 leading packaging suppliers currently listed as exhibitors.

Intended to facilitate exchanges between visitors and exhibitors, exhibition organiser Oriex takes pride in PCD being designed on a “human scale” that allows for the most efficient use of visitors’ time. Stands are set up in spaces of 6m² or 12m², in a single hall, with a Meeting Area on hand for discussions and private seminars, and two enclosed areas where the separate conference programmes for PCD and ADF will be held.

Following an opening speech by L’Oréal packaging innovation director Pierre Ducastin on the first morning, on the theme of innovation in the cosmetics sector, a busy conference agenda will commence, with a series of lectures designed to highlight the innovations that will become strategic components of brand development in a perfume and cosmetics packaging sector said to be valued at €20 billion in 2012.

Conferences Day 1 – Feb 6

PCD: subjects covered in the first morning will include ‘Biosourced plastics and renewable materials’, and ‘Innovation strategy: technological overview and patents’; while the afternoon will be devoted to discussions on ‘Packaging innovation: beauty, care, make-up’, as well as ‘e@PCD’, which covers the increasing role played by electronics in cosmetics packaging.

ADF: the day 1 morning session will cover ‘Aerosol techniques: recent advances’, and ‘Cinching of the valve’; while afternoon discussions will centre on ‘Varnishes: solutions to new requirements’, and ‘Propellants: environmental overview’.

Conferences Day 2 – Feb 7

PCD: technology will lead the way on day 2, with morning debates on ‘Metal: forms, deposits, and metallic appearances, sensoriality, magnetic systems’, and ‘Finishing: shells and accessories’; followed after lunch by ‘Presentation boxes and promotional POS: recent advances’.

ADF: the second day will have sessions on ‘Plastics aerosols: boosting development’, followed by ‘Spray: definition, status of techniques, foams’. Two combined sessions will conclude the exhibition’s Conference agenda after lunch on day 2: ‘Management of specifications and technical documentation’, and ‘Design & packaging workflow’.

Also on the last afternoon, scheduled from 16:00-17:00, the headline event of the exhibition will be the PCD Awards ceremony, to be presented by L’Oréal’s Alain Béthune, and followed by cocktails and more networking opportunities for all before the closure of the exhibition.

Acknowledging innovation

Winners of the 2013 PCD Awards will be announced and displayed at the Paris show again next February. The PCD Awards are designed to recognise the best products in the categories of ‘Packaging Innovations’ and ‘Formulation/Packaging Compatibility’, and are open to products placed on the European market between 1 January 2012 and the 31 December 2012.

Prizes in the PCD Awards are awarded by an independent jury comprising journalists and packaging experts in the perfumes and cosmetics fields. Free to enter, the guiding theme of the Awards remains ‘Sustainability’.
